The Natchitoches Economy

The Natchitoches economy is multi-faceted.  Nearly half the workforce falls into Manufacturing, Healthcare, or Education.  Another ~15% are employed in Retail(/Tourism).  A vibrant downtown, anchored by a 33-block National Landmark District, is the heart of the city of Natchitoches; Natchitoches, in turn, is the heart of Natchitoches Parish (and the parish seat).  Several manufacturers are located around the City, and throughout the parish; these include Weyerhaeuser, International Paper-Red River Mill, Pilgrim’s Pride, ADA Carbon Solutions, RoyOMartin – Chopin Plywood facility and Alliance Compressors, an Emerson joint venture.  The epicenter of regional healthcare is located in East Natchitoches (City), anchored by the Natchitoches Regional Medical Center, a Christus facility.  The NRMC hosts numerous services in-house, with a strong network of affiliated clinics providing holistic health services.  Natchitoches and surrounding parishes are also served by the Natchitoches Outpatient Medical Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC).  Natchitoches has been home to Northwestern State University since 1884 and NSU, a public four-year, regional university, now serves nearly 10,000 students throughout its network of campuses.
